Does Dark Tea Expire?

Unlike green tea or other lightly fermented teas, dark tea (such as Pu-erh or Liubao) does not have a strict expiration date in the traditional sense. Instead, it improves with age when stored properly.

Dark tea undergoes post-fermentation, meaning it continues to transform over time. Under the right conditions—cool, dry, well-ventilated spaces away from direct sunlight and strong odors—its flavor becomes smoother, richer, and more complex. Some well-aged dark teas are even considered more valuable than new ones.

However, dark tea can go bad if exposed to excessive moisture, causing mold, or if contaminated by foreign smells. Signs of spoilage include a musty odor, visible fuzz, or an unpleasant sour taste. In such cases, the tea is no longer suitable for consumption.

So while dark tea has no fixed expiration date, its quality depends entirely on how it is stored. With proper care, it can be enjoyed for decades.
